We are pleased to announce the upcoming Historic Cemetery Preservation Workshop on Saturday, April 1, 2023. This workshop is part of our Practical Preservation Series sponsored by Middle Tennessee Electric. We are pleased to partner with the Center for Historic Preservation at MTSU, the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area, and the Hard Bargain Association to offer attendees a hands-on technical and practical approach to historic cemetery preservation and community engagement. Additional community partners include the Toussaint L’Ouverture Cemetery Association and Mt. Hope Cemetery.

We will begin the morning with a detailed presentation on best practices and an overview of historic cemetery preservation care led by Dr. Stacey Graham, Professor and Historic Cemetery Preservation expert with the Center for Historic Preservation at Middle Tennessee State University. The afternoon session will begin with a tour of Mount Hope Cemetery followed by a fully immersive, hands-on experience learning and cleaning historic headstones in Toussaint L’Ouverture Cemetery. On-site parking is available at the Hard Bargain Association Main Office, also known as Ty’s House, located at 608 Mount Hope Street, Franklin, TN 37064.

Dr. Stacey Graham
Stacey Graham, Ph.D., is the research professor for the Center for Historic Preservation at Middle Tennessee State University. She has been conducting cemetery preservation workshops since 2015 and has been contributing research, writing, and other assistance to historic cemetery reports for the Center since 2007. She also works on Center projects involving other types of historic sites, serves as project coordinator for the Teaching with Primary Sources-MTSU program of the Library of Congress, and teaches undergraduate, graduate, and study abroad courses in the MTSU History Department.
